German giant Ratiopharm Ulm is back again, this time with some new draft prospects, to fill the shoes of Pacôme Dadiet and Juan Nunez. Ben Saraf and Noa Essengue are off to phenomenal starts to the BBL and EuroCup campaign.

Saraf burst onto the scene this past summer with tantalizing performances for Israel at the FIBA U18 EuroBasket 2024. The Israeli Guard took over portions of games for his team, dropping 40 points multiple times en route to a fourth-place finish at the tournament and the EuroBasket scoring title at 28.1 PPG.

Also playing a significant role for Ulm this year, Noa Essengue has long been regarded as a top international prospect for the 2025 Draft, dating back to his days in his native France. The lanky 6’10” PF oozes with potential with every step on the floor, from his intimidating inside presence to his budding 3-point shot.

Ben Saraf - Guard

At the helm of the Ulm offense is the 18 y/o Israeli Guard, whose crafty presence enables him to easily maneuver older players. Saraf’s current trajectory is feeling reminiscent of Nikola Topić from a year ago. A player who burst onto the scene in the summer due to an international tournament then follows it up with solid play in their first taste of high-level professional basketball.

Against Trefl Sopot (video shown above), Saraf dropped 17 points and 10 assists. Saraf’s 6’6” frame helps him get to his spots in the mid-range while still being able to compete amongst the trees down low. At this stage in his development, Saraf looks most promising out in transition, feeding teammates and attacking the basket. He’s one of those players on the floor you just can’t take your eye off.

Noa Essengue - Forward

As mentioned above, Essengue is the prototypical 4-man that scouts scour the globe for every year. He boasts impressive fluidity for a guy of his size, which only furthers his case for being one of the top bigs of this year’s class. A breakout year is on the cards for Essengue after a season that saw him see limited action in 16 professional games.

Essengue’s game has flashes of Jalen Johnson to me. Fluid, easy-mover at 6’10” with the ability to be a jumbo-initiator, simultaneously providing explosiveness and a developing jumper. It’s worth keeping an eye on Essengue’s jumper specifically. He’s shot it noticeably better over the last few months, showing some promise that mightn’t have come to fruition yet.

Both Saraf and Essengue are giving Ratiopharm Ulm fans a reason to be excited, each offering their unique flavor to a team already known for grooming top-tier talent. With the 2024 NBA Draft cycle finally over, NBA decision-makers are elated to see what’s on the horizon. In what was dubbed much of an underwhelming cycle, 2024’s prospects lacked that star potential at the top of the draft, leading to some interesting reallocations of draft capital on draft night.

2025 has long been labeled a great draft. Prospects like Cooper Flagg have been tracked since they were 14-15 years old and have shown incredible potential across high school, AAU, and Fiba.

Additionally, 2025 should have a phenomenal crop of international talent, including Spain’s Hugo Gonzalez, France’s Nolan Traore, Russia’s Egor Demin, and others (Edgecomb, Maluach, Essengue, etc.).

That being said, let’s dive into a few prospects to watch for the 2025 NBA Draft!

Cooper Flagg - Forward - Duke

Flagg, the consensus #1 prospect for the Class of 2024, brings incredible defensive versatility, production, explosiveness, and passing alongside a budding jump shot. Flagg is next up in the line of generational prospects, and his qualities fit the bill. In the youth levels, Flagg has had some crazy 40 and 50 + point games while bringing impactful defense.

Next season at Duke, Flagg will be in a prime position to be selected #1 overall next June, but he must answer the question: Can he be a #1 option on a championship team? Jon Scheyer will prepare him, so look for Flagg to hit the ground running next year on what should be a good Duke team.

Egor Demin - Guard - BYU

My current favorite player in the class, Egor Demin, brings a ridiculous amount of skill to NBA coaching vet Kevin Young’s team. At 6’9”, Demin is a jumbo point guard with tons of playmaking, shooting, and self-creation for an 18-year-old.

Demin recently popped to me at the ANGT Next Gen Tournament in Berlin, where top European academies faced off against one another, where Demin put on a show. Turn-arounds, fades, spot-up threes, pick n’ role play, you name it, Demin did it. That’s why it’s hard not to like Demin.

Although it’s yet to be seen the style of basketball Kevin Young will play next year, it seems fair to assume that he’ll let his guys rock like it’s an NBA offense. Demin should see the ball in his hands a lot, alongside fellow freshman phenom Kanon Catchings. Watch out for Demin because, depending on the season he has, he could be a top 5 pick.

Nolan Traore - Guard - Saint-Quentin (Pro A)

Long touted as the next great guard out of France, Traore has made significant strides over the last year as a player and is poised to be selected in the top 5 next year. After a strong few months, including an 18-point, 4-assist, 2-rebound outing at the Nike Hoop Summit and a 45-point bomb on FC Barcelona at ANGT Next Gen in Berlin, Traore came to the decision to stay in France with Saint-Quenting (the team he played with this year) opposed to coming stateside to the collegiate basketball scene.

Traore is a potent scorer with good playmaking skills. When watching film of Traore, his explosiveness jumps off the screen, constantly blowing by defenders left and right with a quick first step. Averaging 10 points a night in Pro A as a 17-year-old is no easy feat despite Traore’s struggles with efficiency. He had strong nights to close the year against Asvel and Chalon, suggesting Traore could be gold if consistency comes.

Look for Traore to take a step up in his role next year with Saint-Quentin as they look to improve upon a 6th-place finish this year in Pro A.

With the conclusion of Day 2 of the new 2-Day NBA Draft format, many franchises have walked away feeling better about the future of their rosters. Lots of fascinating decisions were made, players selected, and capital discarded.

To be specific, San Antonio betting on Middle Schoolers in their haul from Minnesota for microwave scorer Rob Dillingham was… interesting, to say the least. Many teams this year gave off the vibe they’re gearing up for what could be a historic 2025 Draft class next year with the likes of Cooper Flagg, Dylan Harper, and Nolan Traore.

Despite this, there were a lot of good value picks in the second round that I liked. Picks like Enrique Freeman, Melvin Ajinça, Johnny Furphy, and Ajay Mitchell all feel like guys who will carve out roles at the next level, whether that’s by bringing an immediate steadying presence (Mitchell), playing hard (Freeman), or potentially being stashed (Ajinça).

That being said, here are my favorite picks from the 2024 NBA Draft.

Jared McCain - Guard - Philadelphia 76ers

McCain’s dynamic shotmaking will bring an injection of perimeter shooting to a team in dire need of more shooting. McCain should slot right in alongside Embiid and Maxey (and maybe Paul George 👀).

Primarily used as an off-ball player under Jon Scheyer, McCain could additionally take on more ball-handling responsibilities further on down the line in his development. Initially, McCain may be used similarly to how JJ Redick was once used in Philly, constantly running off of screens to shake defenders for open looks. Furthermore, spot-up shooting will be an immediate strength for McCain, cementing his status as a high-floor player in this draft.

Expect McCain to solidify his role under Nick Nurse early on in training camp while gaining the respect of his peers for his commendable work ethic, defensive competitiveness, and maturity.

Ryan Dunn - Wing - Phoenix Suns

A versatile defender who started his career as a walk-on, Ryan Dunn brings immediate All-Defense upside as a lengthy wing on the perimeter. In a bit of an “awkward phase,” as I would describe it at the moment, Suns owner Mat Ishbia is fixated on winning with his current roster, and Dunn certainly helps with that defensively but doesn’t offensively.

A complete liability on the offensive side of the ball at the moment, Dunn brings no shooting and little hope for improvement. Dunn had some bad misses this year, but the defensive potential is immense. Dunn had a historic year defensively with his switchability, which should bring him a good deal of success should this be the right situation.

Dunn’s developmental trajectory of his shot will largely determine the extent of his minutes early on in his career. He reminds me of Matisse Thybulle in that way: a talented defender whose shot may end up hindering his career trajectory.

Ajay Mitchell - Guard - OKC Thunder

Mitchell, a talented three-year guard from UCSB by way of Liège, Belgium, fits the mold of an OKC player. A highly skilled, big guard who puts pressure on the rim while improving others (high assist rate).

Mitchell should have limited opportunities to start his career, but the Thunder seem to be moving on from some cherished bench players like Andrew Wiggins or Isaiah Joe (both extension-eligible). Furthermore, Mitchell’s opportunities could also be determined by the future availability of Nikola Topić.

Look for Mitchell to have a surplus of influence on the OKC Blue at first, but sooner rather than later, I would expect Mitchell to find his way onto an NBA roster somewhere, whether in OKC or elsewhere.

With the Draft less than 24 hours away, many NBA GMs and scouts are putting in their last words about whom they may select tonight. Trades are surely being worked out, and draft decisions are being made.

So many things have been rumored to potentially happen, like OKC trading into the top 10 or other late lottery teams trading back for a Bub Carrington or Johnny Furphy. The majority of these rumors are uncertain due to the nature of this Draft. Furthermore, the weakness of the Draft at the top has led to teams like Houston considering auctioning off their pick(s).

OKC Thunder Trade?

According to ESPN's Jeremy Woo, the Thunder will have a plethora of options at #12. Do they stay put and select a youthful, high-upside project like Tidjane Salaun, trade up wagering future assets, targeting a center like Clingan, or trade down, electing to gain assets to give themselves more flexibility to possibly select an older prospect?

Sam Presti will answer these questions tonight, but choosing which one will be the best choice will be difficult. He's been known to trade up, like last year with Cason Wallace, but he's also been known to stick with his pick and select a player. The Thunder's situation is fantastic, so they should be amazing one way or another. Simply put, trust in Sam Presti.

Pacome Dadiet Landing Spot?

After a quick trip to Treviso, Italy, for his mandatory NBA Combine workout, Ratiopharm Ulm's Pacome Dadiet made his way to the US for the few workouts he could complete. By June 16th, Dadiet was fully locked into this year's NBA Draft after listening to the feedback from NBA decision-makers.

Following his strong season in Germany this year, Dadiet should be in a developmental situation on a good roster next year, depending on where he gets drafted. ESPN's Jonathan Givony has largely reported that Dadiet has been connected to the teams at the end of the First and early Second rounds.

Houston Rockets Trade?

Alongside the Memphis Grizzlies, the Houston Rockets have been rumored to trade their pick since the second they landed it through the Draft Lottery. Rafael Stone will have some big decisions to make prior to their pick tonight, with a multitude of stones destined to fall. Jalen Green is up for a hefty extension, but they might want to avoid paying him as they look for a star on the wing like Jimmy Butler or Brandon Ingram.

Additionally, they could stay put, opting to select a guy like Reed Sheppard, who will bring shooting, defensive intensity, and toughness to a team looking to make their first playoff push in a while.

Following an exceptional campaign this season on the heels of a breakout performance at the NBA Academy Games in Atlanta less than a year ago, Johnny Furphy is poised to be selected in the middle of the First Round. Furphy's strong shooting repertoire, rebounding, and physical tools make him an intriguing prospect for NBA GMs in a class weak in young talent.

Averaging 9.0 points, 4.9 rebounds, and 1.0 assists on 46.6/35.2/76.5 shooting splits, Furphy's shooting ability differentiates him from the other young wings scattered across his class. Despite Furphy's coveted shooting for a 19-year-old, he has defensive shortcomings, which have hindered his stock from rising into the lottery, although he has worked out for teams in the lottery.

That being said, let's dive into what makes Johnny Furphy the prospect that he is!

Strengths

To start out, Furphy's main calling card at this stage of his development is his shooting off the catch. It was his bread and butter this past season at Kansas, often receiving kick-outs from Hunter Dickinson's post presence or DaJuan Harris Jr's drives. Furphy knocked these down at a respectable NBA clip in the high thirties, but his constant criticism has been his inability to knock down the three-ball off of movement. In the scattered looks throughout the year he got coming off of screens, pindowns, flares, etc., Furphy struggled to knock them down at a consistent clip. Additionally, Furphy's on-ball shooting is a work in progress, meaning you shouldn't expect much from it for a long time.

Beyond the shooting with Furphy, he brings tons of youthful energy, evident in his lively transition finishes, highlighting his athleticism. Furphy has long been known as a high-flier, and once you see one highlight of Furphy in the open court, you can be sold on his athletic tools combined with his physical tools.

Furthermore, Furphy's athleticism enables him to contribute on the defensive and offensive glass. Finding ways Furphy can consistently contribute to winning will be crucial to him finding his way in the league. Things like rebounding, hustling, and getting out in transition on top of his improving shooting will only help Furphy do that.

Weaknesses

While Furphy's defense is often picked apart all over draft Twitter and, to an extent, rightfully so, there's much more to it than most believe. Firstly, it's important to recognize that there were a good amount of defensive lapses from Furphy over the year. He lacked awareness on cuts, help defense, and weakside shooters at times this year, which, yes, is concerning right now but is easily correctable with NBA coaching.

Now, to the good with Furphy's defense. From what I've seen, I'm content with Furphy's effort on that side of the ball. He gives all he's got considering his shortcomings, lots of which are tied to his slender 189-pound frame despite his 6'9" height.

Additionally, Furphy currently lacks much on-ball creation ability (not that many expect that of him) and has a loose handle. While all of these weaknesses deter decision-makers from possibly selecting him higher, it goes without saying that improvement is imminent with Furphy and his current trajectory.

With the way the NBA Draft is trending, more and more teams at the back half of the first round are looking for players to fill out their championship-contending rotations. College upperclassmen often fit the bill for what these teams are looking for, providing instant shooting, defense, and toughness.

Recent examples of this have been Christian Braun and Jaime Jaquez Jr. Both left school as accomplished collegiate players with little holes in their game, indicating they could contribute to winning basketball from Day 1. In Braun’s case, the Nuggets continued this strategy, drafting Julian Strawther and Jalen Pickett last year, and are rumored to have given promise to Dayton big man DaRon Holmes II this cycle.

Tyler Kolek - Guard - Marquette

After flirting with coming out for good last year, Tyler Kolek returned for a phenomenal Senior year under Shaka Smart, leading Marquette to the Sweet Sixteen before falling to the Cinderella story that was NC State. Kolek’s value at the next level lies as a second-unit playmaker similar to that of a TJ McConnell, who constantly impacts big games at the NBA level. Look for Kolek to be drafted anywhere in the 20s to a team looking for a backup Point Guard.

This past year, Kolek averaged 15.3/7.7/4.9 on 49.6/38.8/85.1 shooting splits. His 3-point shooting should also help maintain the offensive flow of the second unit in the half-court while bringing his trademark stability.

DaRon Holmes II - Big - Dayton

At 6’10, 235 lbs, DaRon Holmes II has all the makings of a positive contributor at the next level. From his ability to efficiently knock down the three ball to his defensive versatility, potentially being able to guard up and down a position, Holmes brings all that NBA decision-makers are looking for from an instant contributing perspective. To me, there are flashes of Naz Reid in Holmes’ game in addition to his hallmark defense.

Holmes averaged 20.3/8.5/2.6 on 54.4/38.6/71.3 shooting splits this past year. Holmes’ should be able to provide bits of instant offense off the bench through his pick-and-pop ability while simultaneously bringing solid individual and team defense. Look for Holmes to be picked in the back half of the first round to the early second round.

Terrence Shannon Jr - Guard - Illinois

After an eventful past few weeks, Terrence Shannon Jr. is officially an innocent man, allowing NBA teams to confidently select him come June 26th. At 6’6”, 225 lbs, Shannon has an NBA-ready frame that will allow him to hang physically from Day 1. Taking his game to a new level this year, it feels like Shannon has cemented himself as a late first-rounder with the court’s decision because the finishing, playmaking, and shooting acumen are all there for the 5th year Senior who was long touted as an NBA guy. Additionally, Shannon is defensively solid, allowing him to potentially stay on the floor early on in his career for extended minutes.

Shannon averaged 23.0/4.0/2.3 on 47.5/36.2/80.1 shooting splits this past year. Some mocks have Shannon headed to Minnesota at 27, but look for Shannon to be selected generally in that range.

As the NBA continues to trend towards long, lanky shot creators with enormous upside, French Pro A remains the place to be as a young French prospect. Tidjane Salaun is no different.

Bursting onto the scene this year with Cholet Basket in the west of France, Salaun played starter-level minutes, something he was prepared to do at the youth level by the Parisian-based club Saint-Charles Charenton.

Saluan's developmental trajectory was similar to those of his mold in the past. After playing as a guard for most of his youth days, Salaun shot up to 6'10" because of a growth spurt enabling him to tap into his next level of upside. With the frame to match at 212 lbs, Salaun possesses an NBA-ready body while maintaining the room to grow physically alongside his game.

With Cholet this past year, Salaun averaged 9.0/4.0/1.0 on 37.3/32.9/76.7 shooting splits. Despite an inefficient campaign, Salaun showed flashes of what the NBA craves nowadays. Furthermore, with prospects like Salaun, inefficiencies can always be ironed out of their game. This was his first year as a pro, and he's only 18.

That being said, let's dive into what drives Tidjane Salaun's Top 5 upside.

Strengths

To start off, it's essential to acknowledge what differentiates Salaun from his peers in this class. Salaun is one of a few prospects with real superstar potential. At 18 y/o, Salaun is much younger than most of the other prospects in this class and tore apart Pro A in a way only so many prospects before him have. Salaun's upside lies in his on-ball creation ability. Primarily playing off-ball this year, Salaun's opportunities on-ball were limited, but when attacking closeouts, Salaun showed tons of encouraging on-ball behaviors. For a guy at his stage in his development, it's clear Salaun has some tools in his toolbox, but he must become more efficient. The guard skills shown here make Salaun intriguing to NBA decision-makers.

Although Salaun shot 32.9% from 3 this past season, the numbers don't tell the whole story. Salaun is a confident shooter off the catch and can regularly punish defenses. NBA GMs currently value Salaun's confident shooting ability as 6'10", sharpshooting wings don't grow on trees.

Additionally, Salaun is strong in transition, something that's limited in the European game but should thrive at the next level. With his long strides, Salaun's athletic, long frame allows him to move with fluidity to catch lobs.

Salaun is also a solid cutter for teammates in the half-court at this stage, allowing him to get easy baskets at his 6'10" frame. Cutting is a highly translatable skill for him at the next level that should help him stay on the court early on in his career.

Lastly, I'd be remiss to ignore Salaun's physical tools and how they correlate to defensive upside/versatility at the next level. Salaun may be able to guard 1-5 in due time, but time will tell. He shuffles his feet well and possesses a long wingspan, but simple team defensive mistakes must be etched out for Salaun to blossom defensively.

Weaknesses

When mentioning Salaun's weaknesses, it's noteworthy that Salaun is an extremely raw prospect at this stage in his development. By no means is he a perfect prospect. He stands out because he has upside in a class that, by most accounts, lacks upside.

Firstly, Salaun must become a better all-around playmaker for others if he wants to truly tap into his upside as a scorer. To open up all facets of his game, Salaun must learn when to pass and how to create looks for others based off of his natural ability.

This play against Riga is a perfect example. Salaun drove into traffic and somehow got fouled, but it was a rushed and out-of-control decision, something that must be cleaned up at the next level.

Although he currently lacks sufficient playmaking skills, the young Frenchman shows healthy flashes of PnR playmaking. He's also fundamentally sound, which aids his decision-making and his strong feel for the game at his size.

Defensively, Salaun has consistent lapses on a possession-by-possession basis that will need to be cleaned up to become a neutral to positive team defender at the next level. Salaun’s intangibles are what give him defensive upside, but currently, he’s a subpar defensive player on the court.

Generally, when weighing Salaun's weaknesses (he has plenty more than playmaking currently), I wouldn't put too much weight into his negatives, as they're bound to work themselves out over the next couple of years. Improvement is imminent for Salaun once he's surrounded by a world-class coaching staff in the NBA.

In conclusion, Tidjane Salaun embodies the type of high-upside prospect NBA teams covet in today's game. At just 18 years old, with a compelling blend of size, skill, and potential, Salaun's flashes of brilliance overshadow his current inefficiencies. His guard-like abilities at 6'10", confident shooting, and defensive versatility make him a rare find. While he remains raw, the foundation is there for Salaun to develop into a superstar. Coming out of high school as a highly touted prospect, Isaiah Collier had scouts drooling over what he could bring to an NBA offense in a year's time. Collier is getting looks from the late lottery to the back half of the first round a year later. Why is that?

After a disappointing year collectively for USC, which saw the talented team miss the tournament, head coach Andy Enfield depart for SMU, and injuries across the roster, Collier's stock has somewhat plummeted from a surefire top-10 pick to a guy who is likely to be picked in the 20s.

Despite averaging 16.3 points, 4.3 assists, and 2.9 rebounds on 49.0/33.8/67.3 shooting splits for the year, Collier has caught a lot of flak for his subpar shooting and decision-making as a lead guard in a crowded USC backcourt. Collier's draft stock is falling for reasons beyond his play, but what are those reasons, and what will Collier bring to the table at the next level?

Strengths

To begin, Collier's main calling card at this stage in his development is his fantastic rim pressure. At 6'3", 205lbs, Collier is still much of the explosive athlete we saw coming out of high school, which landed him as the Class of 2023's #1 recruit and MDAAG MVP Honors. With a 30.2% usage rate this year, Collier saw the ball in his hands a lot, leading him to ample opportunities to get downhill, often unassisted, buckets. Naturally, Collier got to the free-throw line early and often due to lots of rim pressure. He averaged 5.8 FTA per game, an early indicator that Collier will positively affect the game at the next level by attacking the basket.

Collier's ability to be crafty and change speeds also benefits him in his pursuit of the basket. As a result of Collier's consistent rim pressure, passing windows began to open, highlighting his potential as a decision-maker with the ball in his hands.

Dating back to his playing with The Skill Factory on the Nike EYBL and Wheeler HS in Marietta (Ga.), Collier could always create for others. Lost in a slew of turnovers from the 19 y/o this season was an innate passing talent.

Going back to Collier's 30.2% usage rate, with the ball in his hands as much as he had the past season, you were bound to see some of his passing talent. Firstly, off the live dribble, Collier frequently hit cutters, rollers, shooters, etc., for high-quality looks for the offense. In a class lacking freshman creators, Collier stands out in my eyes, which is why his talent is being overlooked as a prospect in the class.

In the PnR, Collier has displayed an adequate feel for his roller and weakside shooter. Despite sloppiness (expected for a freshman), Collier showed what makes his passing ability so coveted for the most part over the course of the year going back to high school. Furthermore, Collier has plenty of clips from high school that cement the idea that he has a future role as a PnR playmaker.

Weaknesses

To start off, Collier's main area of improvement is his TOs. Far too often in the beginning part of the year, Collier made sloppy mistakes that led to 10+ games with 4 or more turnovers. Whether it was dribbling it off his foot, being out of control in traffic, or an inaccurate pass, these small things added up and contributed to USC's often poor offense.

Despite that, Collier saw significant improvement in the latter half of the year, taking care of the ball more, something that will have to be his calling card if he's to stick at the next level.

In addition to cleaning up his turnovers, Collier's main swing skill at the next level will be his 3-point shot. This year, Collier shot 33.8% from the floor. While this isn't an ideal number, it doesn't tell the full story. Collier shot 37% (17/46) off-the-catch for the year, hinting at initial promise as a decent shooter off-ball (keep in mind this was on low volume). On the ball is where Collier has tons of room to grow, which could enable him to tap into the upside that was shown in high school as a high-level, on-ball creator.

In conclusion, Isaiah Collier's draft stock might have taken a hit due to USC's disappointing season and his struggles with turnovers and inconsistent shooting. With less than one week to the start of the NBA Draft on June 26th, front offices around the league are scrambling, making last-second adjustments to their boards with late workouts, medicals, and more. Over the course of the last week or two, bits of news have broken regarding player movement and where we could see them go.

From Colorado's Cody Williams, who has seen some buzz lately, to Frenchman Alex Sarr, there has been plenty of movement up and down the board lately.

That being said, here are some of the latest players gaining and losing steam in their campaign to be selected in the NBA Draft in five days.

Cody Williams - Wing - Colorado

Working out for nearly every team in the lottery, Cody Williams' draft range has appeared to be wide, with some thinking he may have the ability to be selected around #5. Williams has even worked out for Atlanta at #1 alongside several other top prospects and reportedly killed other workouts for teams like the Jazz.

Personally, I believe Williams' upside relative to his peers in this class is too hard to pass up in the 6-10 range in this draft. Despite the shooting and handle concerns, Williams will become a respectable shooter and be able to tighten his handle over the course of his development. He has all the tools to be successful defensively from Day 1, with plenty of upside to grow into offensively on-ball and off-ball.

Alex Sarr - Big - Perth Wildcats

The shocking news surrounding Alex Sarr over the past week has been the decision not to workout with Atlanta yet. Sarr still has time in the days leading up to the draft to workout for Atlanta, but players don't always have to workout for teams to be selected, as seen in the past. Additionally, Sarr has been in front of top teams at the combine and possesses familiarity across the top of the lottery.

Sarr falling to Washington as a result of Risacher or Clingan heading to Atlanta could be perfect. Sarr's defensive versatility inside out will immediately contribute to winning in Washington despite their current rebuild under GM Will Dawkins. Furthermore, Sarr's budding perimeter game offensively could fit in nicely alongside blossoming stars Bilal Coulibaly and Deni Avdija.

Watch out for Sarr to fall a spot potentially come Draft night, but know it may be for the better.

Devin Carter - Guard - Providence College

Son of former NBA Guard Anthony Carter, Devin Carter took College Basketball by storm this past year, dominating the Big East and eventually taking home Big East Player of the Year honors despite Providence falling short of the tournament in Kim English's first year as the man at the helm. Starting with the NBA Combine, Carter displayed his otherworldly athleticism, smashing athletic testing before heading off on the workout circuit for teams across the lottery. Throughout workouts, it's been reported that Carter's experience and defensive acumen have shined, assuring win-now teams in the lottery that Carter would be a fine selection.

Carter seems like a player you can't go wrong with for this weak of a draft at the top. You know what you will get with Carter: Strong on and off-ball defense, a responsible ball handler, and a budding shooter. Carter's make-or-break skill in the NBA will be his shooting. Despite shooting 40% from beyond the arc this year, Carter's shooting is still up in the air, as he has only had one year of good shooting numbers.

Look out for Carter to be a riser the closer we get, but keep in mind that he has an extensive range in comparison to other prospects.

With the Pre-Draft process nearing an end, as we move closer to the June 26th Draft, several players have taken advantage of the opportunities in front of them. Starting with the Portsmouth Invitational, to the G League Elite Camp and NBA Combine, before finally culminating in a slew of workouts for teams. Due to the nature of this year’s “weak” draft, many upperclassmen have taken advantage of the opportunities before them.

Notable Pre-Draft risers in previous years have gone on to become sizable contributors at the NBA level. Most recently, Jalen Williams’ ascension to a lottery pick from being a projected second-rounder when he declared comes to mind, primarily due to all the success he’s experienced in his two short years professionally.

Particularly for this year, lots of the risers in this draft class will provide value in filling the gaps towards the end of rotations at the next level rather than turn out to be the next Jalen Williams. There’s lots of value to be found in 2nd-rounders, as proven over the years. These guys will be impacting playoff rotations sooner rather than later, and with these risers, an underrated trait to follow is a prospect’s development curve and the trajectory they’re on.

Baylor Scheierman - Guard, Creighton

The further along we get in the Pre-Draft process, the more teams seem to realize the importance of a sweet-shooting, big guard who’s a playmaker and holds his own offensively within the flow of the offense. Baylor Scheierman completely fits the mold of what a seasoned upperclassman can bring to an NBA rotation from Day 1. Additionally, Scheierman possesses a plus frame at 6’6”, 205 lbs, which will ideally help ease his transition defensively and allow him to contribute on the glass.

This year, Scheierman averaged 18.5/9.0/3.9 on 44.8/38.1/87.6 shooting splits. Scheierman is up there for most NBA-ready in terms of contributing to winning out of all of the upperclassmen, leading me to expect a Day 1 NBA role out of him on a playoff-pushing team.

Pacome Dadiet - Wing, Ratiopharm Ulm

Despite not being in the States for most of the Pre-Draft process, Pacome Dadiet has found a way to rise up boards due to a unique combination of desirable qualities. Firstly, Dadiet is still 18 (he turns 19 in August), and when you pair that with the production and frame (6’9”) that he possesses, you reach a player with a pretty high ceiling. There’s an argument to be made that Dadiet has the highest ceiling in the class due to his one year as a pro in the BBL with Ratiopharm Ulm.

Dadiet averaged 9.1 points this year with 3.6 rebounds on 64% FG and 36% 3FG across all competitions. Dadiet simply found a way to affect the game through his shooting, connective nature, and effort, all of which lead to success early on in an NBA career.

AJ Johnson

Following a rather underwhelming 23-24 campaign in the NBL Next Stars Program, AJ Johnson has taken full advantage of his return stateside, captivating GMs league-wide with his decision-making and assertiveness, impacting the game positively. At 6’4”, 167 lbs, it’s no secret that Johnson is a few years away physically, but the raw ability is there, and in a year lacking some higher upside swings, Johnson provides that.

This year, Johnson averaged 2.8 points on 35% FG and 27.8% 3FG in just over 8 minutes a game. Johnson’s sporadic playing time in Illawarra’s rotation this year perfectly exemplifies Johnson’s physical trajectory at this stage. The NBL is a man’s league, and Johnson wasn’t ready. With the NBA valuing Johnson’s skill set, though, look for Johnson to be selected in the early to mid-second round mainly due to a stellar showing at the combine.

After Castle's first mention on Draft Latest around two months ago, Dan Hurley's UConn Huskies completed their quest for back-to-back National Championships. Castle played an outsized role for a Freshman, taking pride defensively while displaying encouraging signs offensively. Soon after, Castle found himself fully immersed in the pre-draft process, interviewing with teams and endeavoring to cater to his potential situation to enable him to thrive.

Coming out of high school at Newton (Ga.), Castle was a tricky 6'6" Guard/Wing prospect with an excellent feel for the game but fell into the new era mold of positionless basketball. A 5-star McDonald's All-American, Castle arrived in Storrs with big expectations. The first half of the season for Castle exhibited typical Freshmen adaptation struggles. The 3-point shot didn't fall, compounded by knee troubles that knackered Castle throughout the majority of the 1st half of the year.

With the 2nd half of the season, Castle turned a page. UConn ripped off lots of wins, and Castle played an essential role alongside his other draft-aspiring teammates. Averaging 11.1/4.7/2.9 at 6'6", 215 lbs, albeit on subpar efficiency from beyond the arc (26.7% on 2.6 attempts per game), Castle's contributions to winning have impressed front-offices league-wide cementing Castle as a lottery pick. Now, the question is: Where will Castle land if he's declining workouts, and what will he bring to those teams? Without further ado, let's jump right in!

Strengths

Throughout the year, as expected, Castle provided disruptive on and off-ball defense for Dan Hurley's team. With his 6'6", 215 lbs frame combined with a 6'9" wingspan, Castle has all the tools to be a highly effective 2-way player at the next level. Especially throughout UConn's national championship run, Castle took on the opposing team's best player, making life difficult for several quality players like Mark Sears, for example (although he played well vs UConn). Additionally, the foot speed Castle equips teams with on the perimeter is enviable league-wide, which will help Castle carve out a niche early on in his NBA career while his offense catches up to his defense.

In addition to Castle's defensive acumen, he possesses intriguing playmaking skills that leave a lot for NBA teams to work with. Despite not being an advantageous creator for himself, Castle constantly found ways to manipulate defenders in the pick & roll, getting to his spots efficiently before creatively getting his shot off or playmaking for others. Castle's passing brings a lot to NBA offenses. Despite not having the shot at this point in his development, Castle still possesses loads of gravity for his age because of his passing. At this stage in his trajectory as a player, Castle is similar to Anthony Black, who was picked 6th last year by the Magic for reasons similar to Castle. Black carved out a minor role for the playoff team this year through his defense, which will be similar to Castle, albeit probably in different situations. The best way to describe Castle's passing is flowy. It keeps everybody in rhythm while initiating good offensive flow in the halfcourt, driving the offense.

It's also worth mentioning that due to his limitations on the perimeter offensively, Castle has developed into a far better cutter than he was during his high school days. This year, Castle cut more than he did throughout his time at Newton High School (Ga.)and Atlanta Xpress (UAA), which helps further the idea of his initial contributions at the next level.

Weaknesses

As mentioned sparsely above, Castle's main weakness in his game at the moment is in his shot. He shot 26.7% from 3 this year but had moments of promise on the perimeter. Dating back to his high school and AAU days, Castle has shown a willingness to take and make difficult shots from deep. Although he had the willingness to take those shots in high school, Castle has historically been an inefficient shooter from beyond the arc. Castle's 3 point shot shouldn't be concerning, though. He's had outbursts that lead you to believe he can translate that to the next level, like the 41-point performance vs. Duncanville (TX.) and Ron Holland, splashing 3s from all over the court confidently.

Castle's aggressiveness leads me to believe it can be replicated at the next level should he work with a good shooting coach and hone in on his 3-point stroke. Whether his shot will be like how it is in high school (above) or college (below) remains to be determined, but the intangibles are there alongside solid mechanics despite a slightly slow release.

In addition to Castle's shooting, it'll be interesting to see how the rest of the workout process plays out for Castle, as he's made it known he will only be working out for teams without true PGs (Wizards, Spurs, and Jazz). This will complicate the potential landing spots for Castle, highlighting a question/weakness of sorts: What role does Castle play at the next level?

As Castle embarks on his NBA journey, his unique blend of defensive prowess and playmaking potential makes him an exciting prospect despite his current shooting struggles. His size, wingspan, and agility will allow him to make an immediate impact defensively. A well-documented prospect over the last 2-3 years, the man with Olympic genes, Zaccharie Risacher, has ascended to a premier prospect over the previous year. After a poor showing at the Nike Hoop Summit in April last year, the Frenchmen bounced back strongly after an offseason transfer to JL Bourg from LDLC Asvel, owned by former Champion Tony Parker.

With the transfer to JL Bourg came a significant uptick in playing time, shooting up to around 20 minutes a game and achieving double-digit scoring averages. After settling in quickly to his role as an off-ball wing, Risacher thrived domestically and continentally as JL Bourg played an extensive schedule with the Euro Cup throughout the season.

As June's NBA Draft approaches, decision-makers are puzzled by Risacher's on-ball upside due to his lack of pick-and-roll experience and inability to create his own shot. Risacher has been consistently putting in winning performances, elevating the bigger the stage gets.

Throughout this year's LNB Pro A season with JL Bourg, Risacher averaged 10.1/3.3/0.9 on 43.9/35.2/74.0, albeit with a massive shooting slump since January, which he recently broke out of before the Pro A playoffs. As for the Euro Cup, Risacher took advantage of his extra opportunities, excelling with an efficient 13.1/3.6/1.1 on 56.6/56.1/65.9 with impressive performances on the road in front of hostile crows like against Aris BC in Greece dropping 20/3/1 with excellent efficiency and defense.

With that being said, what makes Risacher so intriguing as a prospect, and more importantly, why is his range so big?

Strengths

At the heart of Risacher's game is his three-point stroke. As evidenced over the last year, Risacher shot an amazing clip well above average for the NBA, hovering around 40% for most of the year while his peers struggled. Risacher's immediate 3-and-D capabilities as an off-ball mover, shooter, and defender make him an attractive pick. Still, in a draft without high-level individual creators, Risacher is different from what many look for in a #1 pick. Mechanically, Risacher is excellent and has been for a while. At 6'10" with a 6'10.5" reported wingspan, Risacher can get his shot off over anybody with a high release point elevating over contesting defenders.

Defensively, Risacher is highly versatile due to his 6'10" frame, which currently allows him to hound defenders 1-4, which gives hope he could one day guard 1-5. Additionally, it's worth mentioning that Risacher should have no problem filling out his 6'10", 210 lb frame, which will help him guard larger players a few years down the line. Risacher's quickness on his feet allows him to slide with quick guards, while his length aids him in guarding lankier wings on the perimeter.

Risacher's current skillset is tailor-made for teams ready to win à la JL Bourg. Still, teams like Atlanta, Washington, San Antonio, Charlotte, etc., are rebuilding and could benefit from another prototypical NBA wing with a high floor and potentially All-Star upside should Risacher's game continue to develop off the bounce in the pick-and-roll and creating for himself. With his high feel for the game, expect Risacher to hit the ground running in the States.

Weaknesses

It's no secret that the prospects atop this year's NBA Draft are not the most refined offensively, especially in the self-creation category, and Risacher is no exception. Risacher has shown flashes of self-creation with quick punch dribbles or between-the-legs dribbles to create a bit of separation to get his shot off, but generally, self-creation-wise, Risacher leaves a bit to be desired. Risacher has more to his game as a creator, but he's confined to his role as a 3-and-D spacer for JL Bourg. With Risacher's transition to an NBA developmental environment, teams atop the draft should lean towards allowing him to experiment more with the ball in his hands.

Furthermore, Risacher lacks the playmaking acumen of a future high-level NBA creator at this stage in his development. Still, the more looks he gets with the ball in his hands, the more confident I am that Risacher can develop into a solid playmaker for himself and others. Risacher's effective 3-point shot allows him to attack closeouts, which displays flashes of on-ball brilliance. For Risacher to reach his full potential, he must be drafted to an organization fully invested in his development with a reasonably long runway.

With his elite three-point shooting and versatile defensive skills, Zaccharie Risacher is a tantalizing prospect. His ability to thrive off the ball and his quick adaptation to increased playing time at JL Bourg make him an attractive option for teams seeking immediate 3-and-D contributions. Despite a shooting slump earlier this year, Risacher's resilience and impressive performances in high-stakes games showcase his potential to excel on bigger stages alongside his excellent 3-point percentages.

However, Risacher's draft range remains wide due to his limited experience in self-creation and playmaking. For teams willing to invest in his development and allow him to experiment more with the ball in his hands, Risacher could evolve into much more than a role player. His high basketball IQ and physical tools provide a solid foundation, and with the right environment, he could reach his full potential and become a significant asset in the NBA.

Entering the 2023-2024 collegiate basketball season, Jim Larrañaga’s Miami Hurricanes was poised for a return to College Basketball’s brightest stage, March Madness. Key contributors Nigel Pack and Wooga Poplar were destined for big seasons, all the while leading the Hurricanes back to the big dance. Injuries, though, had another idea. Pack was constantly plagued by injury throughout the season, giving way for a little-known, 6’8” Freshman PG, Kyshawn George (pronounced key-shawn).

After leaving Switzerland in 2019 for the Élan Chalon youth teams, George hit the jackpot, experiencing a growth spurt that catapulted him to his towering 6’8” size for a PG. All the guard skills George had obtained playing the PG position for years were about to set his trajectory on a new trajectory.

As DraftExpress’ Jonathan Givony made his rounds to the esteemed French Espoirs league, he came across George, who flashed, putting up 17.6/6.5/3.8 on fine splits. He promptly pulled out his cell phone in hopes of helping out an old friend, Jim Larrañaga. And, well, to say the least, George might not have helped save Larrañaga’s Hurricanes’ season, but he definitely displayed his NBA-caliber skillset.

Strengths

George’s best skill is his ability to shoot the 3 both off the catch and the bounce. Throughout his only season (so far because a return is still in play) at Miami, George shot 40.8% from beyond the arc on over 4 attempts a game. Throughout the year, George was good for a catch-and-shoot 3 almost whenever you needed it. His ability to move and play off the ball certainly adds value to his stock at the next level. Relying on his jump shot in the early days of his career will allow him to develop into the player whatever team drafts him wants him to be because of his staggering frame. Also, all of this goes without mentioning George’s beautiful mechanics, combined with a high release point on his jumper.

Another aspect of George’s jumper is his confidence and comfortability, pulling from 3 off the bounce. Rarely do you see a college freshman pull and make threes with so much confidence as if he’s a senior. These flashes leave NBA decision-makers puzzled about George’s status as a draftee.

Other aspects of George’s game where he often flashes are defensively, utilizing his enormous 6’8” frame, which allows him to swallow up smaller guards. Although he has a long way to go in his development, truly unique big guards are few and far between this year, so taking a shot on a developmental guy like George with lots of tools possesses a lot of intrigue.

Lastly, I’d be remiss not to mention his ability as a playmaker. Dating back to his days as a 5’11” PG, George had always been required to play make for his teammates. This carried over throughout his growth spurt, which now allows him to thrive, making quick, simple plays throughout the game. George seems to play the right way, a testament to the European developmental system.

Weaknesses

Despite all the positives mentioned above, George has many flaws to his game and stock, adding context as to why decision-makers in the league view George as a project. Don’t get it twisted, though; George has lots of tools and talent to work with, but understanding his age is a big part of the puzzle. George, for as old as he is for a freshman (born 12/12/03), is not as far along developmentally for his age, which causes hesitation for GMs. George’s tools and talent far outweigh the negative aspects that his age possesses in a historically weak draft, though.

Additionally, George has yet to show that he can be a high-volume producer at a high level. You have to go back a whole year to when George was producing at a high level in France’s top U21 league (Espoirs), which had Bilal Coulibaly playing in it a little over a year ago. Here’s some context as to what kind of player he was in the Espoirs league:

The flashes with George are there, but he’s yet to put it all together across the Atlantic. His defensive instincts and strong shooting set him up for a positive trajectory developmentally, but factors such as his age and lack of production say otherwise.

Wrap-Up

Kyshawn George represents an intriguing prospect with tantalizing upside heading into the NBA Draft. His exceptional shooting ability, both off the catch and off the dribble, coupled with his imposing 6’8” frame for a point guard, make him a unique talent worth considering. George’s confidence in his shot and his willingness to make plays on both ends of the floor highlight his potential to develop into a versatile contributor at the professional level.

However, it’s crucial to acknowledge George’s developmental trajectory and the lingering questions surrounding his age and production. Despite flashes of brilliance, George is still refining his game and needs time to translate his skills consistently to the highest level of competition. While some NBA decision-makers may view him as a project, George’s combination of shooting prowess, defensive instincts, and playmaking abilities make him an intriguing prospect with considerable room for growth and improvement. As he continues to mature and refine his game, Kyshawn George could evolve into a valuable asset for a team willing to invest in his long-term development.

Through the first two weekends of the tournament, evaluators have been blessed with a large amount of basketball at their disposal, scouring the nation for the next crop of talent ready to make the jump to the pros. Much of what one might expect has occurred so far, including the upsets, the magical runs, and, well, the utter dominance of Danny Hurley’s UConn Huskies.

With the first-round upset of the talent-laden Kentucky Wildcats boasting top prospects Rob Dillingham and Reed Sheppard, scouts have had to turn their attention to the upperclassmen who have brought some excellent to the nation’s stage. As disappointing as the 2024 class has been to evaluate, it cannot be overstated enough how many day 1 contributors there are in this draft class. With the era of NIL (Name, Image, and Likeness) comes older teams playing into the hands of upperclassmen in the tournament leading to deep runs, giving decision-makers plenty of time to form an educated opinion on what to do with their team’s selection(s).

Donovan Clingan

With Dan Hurley’s Huskies in quest of back-to-back National Championships for the first time since Billy Donovan’s Gators in the mid-2000s, one man has been at the center of it all. Connecticut kid Donovan Clingan, who grew up less than 50 miles from campus in Storrs, has been brilliant in the Huskies’ run to Phoenix so far. Amid an agonizing Husky defense, Clingan sits ready to pounce to block opposing players’ shots.

Despite sitting out a good portion of the year due to an injured foot, the 7’2” has displayed the P&R ability that left scouts in awe during the Husky’s run to the championship in 2023. In addition to that, Clingan’s defensive versatility has begun to pop as of late, posting games with 8 and 5 blocks, respectively, throughout the NCAA Tournament so far. Look for Clingan to hopefully display that versatility with an offensively potent Nate Oats’ Alabama team with a red-hot Mark Sears.

Dalton Knecht

Rick Barnes and his Tennesse Volunteers had an immensely successful year, which can be largely attributed to his 6'6” Senior Guard, Dalton Knecht. In the Vols’ run to the Elite Eight, Knecht was on a heater, dropping 3 20+ point games, something that’s become a regular occurrence throughout the season in Knoxville. In a draft that lacks underclassmen talent, Knecht takes the cake as one of if not the best upperclassmen, posing himself for a lottery selection come June.

Sunday’s game featuring our next winners, Zach Edey and Knecht, was a back-and-forth battle as the two seniors fought hard for their teams in hopes of reaching Phoenix. Knecht's shot-making ability was very much on display as Barnes and his coaching staff ran the Northern Colorado transfer off of a multitude of screens, flares, and different actions highlighting his ability to make plays.

Zach Edey

The Purdue Boilermakers are into the Final Four, and a large part of that is due to the man pictured above. The reigning Naismith Player of the Year, Zach Edey, has been on a tear all year, and decision-makers are increasingly valuing the Canadian big man. As mentioned similarly to Dalton Knecht, Edey’s dominance is being valued more in this draft due to the lack of depth of the class. Not bad for a guy who, a year or two ago, many did not see a real NBA role in his future.

Edey’s significantly improved his shot-blocking ability while also becoming more mobile (maybe not to the extent scouts want, but still improved from before). Matt Painter has unlocked a player who’s dominated, so look for Edey to continue to dominate in an interesting big-man battle against DJ Burns.

With March Madness beginning this week, many prospects have lots to prove down the stretch to solidify their status for June. Chaos has already ensued amongst the world of NBA prospects, truly displaying the impact of NIL, especially with how loaded the bubble is this year. A name that comes to mind on that front is Bub Carrington and his looming decision. Pitt is firmly on the bubble and should hold their breath come tonight.

March can make or break whether a prospect decides to stay in school, and with the dynamics of this year’s class, a strong showing in front of scouts on the big stage could prove to be pivotal as to how high a player could land come June. As for the breakdown of the 2024 prospect pool, it’ll be interesting to see how scouts value “winners,” as the teams who make runs at a National Title should have increased eyeballs on their players, helping them surge their stock. A player like Andre Jackson of UConn comes to mind when mentioning a “winner”.

Johnny Furphy

There’s no doubt in the eyes of NBA decision-makers that Kansas’ 6’8” Australian Wing Johnny Furphy contributes to winning, as shown through his marvelous stretch through the heart of Big 12 conference play. To close the season, Furphy has put in some poor performances albeit coincided with poor performances all-around from the Jayhawks. However, with a healthy Hunter Dickinson and Kevin McCullar, Furphy should have all the help he needs to return to form as he regains the lay to the claim of “stock-riser”.

Weathering the storm of the first weekend of the tournament should do wonders for Bill Self and his Kansas team as they look to find form. Winning games should be all that Furphy thinks about, as with the nature of this draft, NBA decision-makers will want to see how Furphy performs when the lights are shining the brightest.

Cody Williams

With the status of Tad Boyle’s Buffaloes officially solidified for the big dance, NBA scouts will be monitoring how Cody Williams, brother of OKC Thunder Wing Jalen Williams, performs down the home stretch. Despite team success out in Las Vegas at the last-ever PAC-12 conference tourney, Williams has taken a backseat to upperclassmen amidst a bit of a slump.

Keeping track of how Williams can affect the game off the bench will be vital to how NBA decision-makers view Williams’ long-term impact at the next level. As inconsistent as Williams has been, I do believe it’s worth noting that development is never linear, and for those of you looking for encouraging signs, I do believe he is further along in that process than his brother was at this age, so there are some positives surrounding his future.

Stephon Castle

Dan Hurley’s UConn Huskies are poised to be the NCAA first back-to-back champion since Billy Donovan’s Gators did it in 07’ and 08’. A potential X-factor in that run will be the impact of Freshman Guard Stephon Castle and how much he will be able to leave his DNA on the game. Despite an up-and-down freshman campaign, there’s no doubt that Castle is everything NBA decision-makers are seeking right now and even more so in a “down” draft.

Proving that he can knock down an open jumper would do a world of help for Castle’s stock heading into workout season. Also, it wouldn’t hurt if he can solidify his place within the rotation as impactful minutes defensively, alluding to a potential immediate role when he officially steps on an NBA court.

Selection Sunday is today, so keep your eyes peeled for the biggest risers over the next couple of weeks. Although I only wrote about 3 prospects today, there’s no doubt that the next month or so holds significant importance for other potential risers (Collin Murray-Boyles 👀). Another thing to keep in mind as the next couple of weeks unfold is that winning is king. If your team wins, there’s a high likelihood a potential prospect played his way up or onto draft boards.

At a little over the midway point in the 23-24 CBB season, only a handful of freshmen have set themselves apart from the rest, think Ja'Kobe Walters, Rob Dillingham, and … Cody Williams. Colorado's star freshman has been on a tear recently, resulting in his draft stock soaring as NBA evaluators flock to Boulder to catch a glimpse of Tad Boyle's blossoming wing. The little brother of OKC Thunder star Wing Jalen Williams, Cody is only coming into his own and should have a bright future ahead of him.

Despite missing 8 games due to a wrist injury in December, the 6'8" Forward with an unofficial 7'0" wingspan has displayed the talent that saw him ascend toward the ladder half of his high school career. Over a recent 4-game stretch for the Buffaloes, Williams averaged 17.8 PTS/3.3 RBD/2.3 AST on 62.7/58.3/66.6 shooting splits, albeit those 3-point attempts being on relatively low volume, not to mention the 4 wins that came with this for Boyle's team. All the while, Williams provided his typical stifling defense, consisting of smaller defenders consumed by his unique length. Numbers are cool and all, but what allows Williams to have all of this continued success?

Strengths

Throughout Williams' first 13 games of his collegiate career, it's become evermore apparent that Williams stands out through his slashing, shooting (mostly as of late), and defense. Despite needing to put on muscle to be ready for the pro game, the display of finishes that Williams has shown throughout his first 13 games has been quite impressive. He's gotten lays over shot blockers, dunked on a few, and generally shown touch that is usually apparent in a Top 5 pick. It is worth noting, though, that Williams' lack of a proper frame has led to him getting bumped off of his line in addition to his okay handle.

As Williams' confidence ascends, he should continue to show off the various finishes he has in his bag, whether runners over bigs or punching it home with authority. And Williams should expect a lot more looks at the rim while attacking closeouts over the course of Pac-12 play as his budding jump shot continues to command the respect of defenses.

Another aspect of Williams' game that's been on display is his defense. Despite not being the quickest lateral defender, Williams' smothering length hounds guards into passing out, turning it over, or getting blocked. Similar to his older brother Jalen, Cody's ability to guard multiple positions is a skill that is highly translatable and should allow him to continue his ascent to the top of the 2024 draft boards. Williams should be able to see lots of minutes early in his rookie year due to his ability to guard. And the defending is not just individual; Williams also thrives as a team defender and should be able to slide right into an NBA defense.

Weaknesses

As it stands right now, Williams has the foundation of a really solid NBA player. He can shoot, defend, and pass at a pretty decent level. But, for Williams to take the next step in his development and follow in the footsteps of his brother Jalen, he must tighten up his handle. It's no surprise that Cody's playmaking ability will dictate his role at the next level, and the first step to tapping into that is by tightening up his handle. This will allow him to thrive on the ball more than he has this season under Tad Boyle. Although they're different players (can't be overstated enough. they are 2 different types of players at this stage), Jalen's ability to lead the Thunder's 2nd unit in an on-ball role is a look ahead to the future for Cody.

Additionally, it's worth monitoring Williams's pull-up jumper. Right now, the percentages don't favor this shot being in his game, but in due time, this should develop into a go-to shot once he has a few years of experience in the association.

The future of Serbian basketball has arrived in the form of KK Mega Basket's Nikola Topić. A 6'7", 200lbs PG who is a youth product of Belgrade-based KK Crvena Zvezda, Topić has experienced pro ball at the highest level domestically in Serbia by way of the KLS and OKK Beograd, but this year, he's made the jump to the Adriatic league. Topić joined KK Mega Basket on loan from KK Crvena Zvezda, following a meteoric rise throughout his Summer as he took home MVP honors at both the Adidas Next Gen Tournament (He had a 49-point, 12-assist game) and FIBA U18 Euro with Serbia.

As Topić continues to develop, his elite skills as a prospect right now will rise to levels that are comparable to the likes of the Luka Dončićs of the world. Topić's passing is the primary skill that separates him from his peers despite a reasonably weak class. Topić's passing is evident through his 6.2 assists (leads the Adriatic League) in various ways, whether it's PnR or off of kickouts. Getting downhill is one of the critical aspects that allows Topić to thrive, as his quick first step allows him to put pressure on the rim at will, which is phenomenal yet challenging to decipher due to the lack of NBA-level athletes in the Adriatic League. Topić's 3-point jumper will determine his ceiling as he progresses as a player, as right now, he's shooting 31.7% on 4.5 3FG a game. For some, Topić's shot might be a bit underwhelming, but there's no lack of evidence that he can become a good shooter. Topić definitely has much to go in his development to reach the player he can become but to understand his ceiling, we must dive into what he is now. So, without further adieu, let's jump into a Nikola Topić breakdown.

Strengths

Topić is hands down the best facilitator in the 2024 class, and that's further cemented by his league-leading 6.2 assists. Topić can give it to you in a variety of ways, mainly of which is via a ball screen. He manipulates the tempo, snaking around his big men before hitting the pocket pass or throwing kick-out passes from a multitude of angles. Topić also displays his playmaking by pushing the pace, drawing multiple defenders, and regular, instinctive reads.

The passing is evident whether it is instinctive, flashy passes like the first one in the clip above or simpler, more improvisational passes à la the second pass. It cannot be overstated enough how impressive these reads are that Topić consistently makes because of the league he is doing it in. That said, about his passing, there are occasional sloppy turnovers, as there are for all guards, but it shows that he can still improve a ton as a passer, which helps you grasp more of a feel for what his ceiling may be.

Another part of the game where Topić excels is driving the basketball. As referenced earlier, Topić's lightning-quick first step combined with his ever-expanding, powerful 6'7" frame allows him to craftily finish around the hoop despite being a below-the-rim athlete. In a league like the ABA, the number of NBA-level athletes is limited, so Topić's rim pressure should be taken with a tad bit of a grain of salt, but for the most part, he checks out as one of the better driving prospects in recent draft history in terms of his efficiency as proven by his 62.4 TS%. When mentioning Topić's driving, it's also worth noting his NBA-ready handle that allows him to create separation, making it easy to get to the rim. But that's also become somewhat of a counterargument to Topić's #1 pick candidacy. Topić quickly getting to the rim has led to him being unable to display counters like a mid-range game. And when he has shown his mid-range shot, Topić has been far from his best, but there shouldn't be much concern whether or not Topić can get these wrinkles out of his game. Below are some general clips of Topić's passing, driving, and overall feel. Peep some of the threes in the video to grasp how he can shoot the three despite lacking the consistency you would ideally like to see from a player of his caliber.

Weaknesses

As mentioned above, Topić's shooting will determine his ceiling as an NBA player. So far, his shooting is just okay. And for a prospect like Topić, one would probably expect more from him, but from my perspective, Topić is right on track. Despite only shooting 31.7% from 3, Topić has shown a lot of ability to make threes albeit inefficiently. His mechanics also leave you feeling good about yourself, which is definitely a positive. Topic's 86.2% from the FT line is also another good indicator that time will do wonders for his jumper. While on loan at OKK Beograd in the KLS last season, Topić shot 36.9% from 3 of 4.3 attempts a game, although against worse competition. He's shown the ability to use the three in various ways, whether it's PnR, the catch, or isolation plays. Topić has all the makings of a league-average 3-point shooter, so this weakness should become a strength with time.

Another weakness of Topić's is his defense. For Topić, defensively, all he needs to become is a solid team defender. One could definitely argue that he is a negative defender at the moment because, in the glimpses we've seen of him guarding on-ball, Topić has struggled to keep up with some of the better athletes of the Adriatic League. As far as a team defender, Topić displays a budding IQ on that end of the floor and should only get better in rotations and such. Defense can be a struggle for Topić but should only last for so long before he becomes an adequate defender.

Nikola Topić's emergence as a standout talent with undeniable potential in the world of basketball over the last year has been incredible. The league is in good hands.

As NBA Summer League has officially come to a close in Vegas, it's time we take a look at all of the latest developments around the league over the last two weeks. Whether it be 2nd-year players taking encouraging strides in their development or rookies showing lots of upside, leaving their teams' fans excited, Summer League was quite the success for many.

With the excitement the last two weeks have brought for under-the-radar teams fans, we must take a look at the development of two sophomores, Jabari Smith Jr. and Ousmane Dieng, in addition to each of their respective cores and what to make of the teams with successful Summer League campaigns as a whole.

Top Standouts

Jabari Smith Jr. - Houston Rockets - F

The 2nd year man out of Auburn put on quite the display in his two games in Vegas, putting on breathtaking displays for those in attendance, with a game-winner included. Smith averaged 30.5 points over two games in Vegas alongside frontcourt mate Tari Eason who played fabulously as well. With these performances, they were both shut down after two games, but if you're a Rockets fan, you've seen all you needed to see. Growth. With the growth these two showed over the last two weeks, you've got to be excited for a season where the Rockets hope to be building toward the postseason.

Obviously, this will all have to be taken with a grain of salt, but the promise that Smith Jr. displayed will leave many expecting quite a leap from a player who might not be ready for that, and that's ok. The Rockets have lots of players that can score at the moment, so for Jabari Smith Jr., figuring out his role early on in the season will factor heavily into what type of season he can have.

Ousmane Dieng - Oklahoma City Thunder - F

Dieng got rolling after a shaky first game in SLC and showed why he deserves a role this upcoming season on a deep OKC team. The similarities to Dieng's idol Paul George run deep. Whether it be breaking down his man of the dribble to get to the cup or pulling off effortlessly fluid stepbacks that leave teams' scratching their heads, Dieng has shown so much promise as to why he can take a leap this year. Dieng averaged 14.1 points with 6.1 rebounds and 4.0 assists over Summer League on encouraging 50/35/77 shooting splits.

With OKC finally in a position to compete, Dieng may still have an inconsistent role going into training camp, but that is where he can solidify that he belongs in the rotation especially considering Mark Daigneault isn't afraid to go 10 players deep. Look for Dieng to take a step in the right direction this year, playing more decisively after a rookie year with plenty of ups and downs.

Top Cores

Houston Rockets

There were so many positives to take away from Summer League that people started to say ridiculous things on Twitter about some of the potential of their young guys. On a serious note, Amen's early injury could've derailed the progress this summer. But, for the Rockets, it helped further display the talent that Jabari and Tari have while giving Cam Whitmore a chance to absolutely show out en route to winning Summer League MVP after a couple of dominant performances showing off his bag in the process.

When you add all of the guys mentioned above that played this year in Summer League to Alperen Şengün, Jalen Green, KPJ, and the rest of their young guys, the Houston Rockets easily have one of the brightest futures in the association. With the addition of Coach Ime Udoka, look for some of their guys' to take leaps as they rise from being bottom dwellers of the NBA.

Oklahoma City Thunder

It's no surprise that the young OKC Thunder are on this list, as their Summer League roster oozes with talent that is easily pairable with the more proven young talents on their roster. Despite a 2-3 campaign over their time in Vegas (2-1 in SLC), the young Thunder got Chet Holmgren fully back on his feet, displayed in a dominant 25-point performance in a W against the Pacers. The development of Ousmane Dieng was widely welcomed, while Cason Wallace showed the steadiness and readiness to contribute to this OKC squad from Day 1 with his defensive intensity and 3-point shooting.

To think that OKC will add all of this talent to an already talented squad with guys like SGA, Giddey, and J-Dub, makes you wonder if OKC can make a Sacramento Kings-like leap this year and push for a playoff seed. Time will tell, as it always does, but there is no doubt that the OKC Thunder's future is brighter than arguably every team in the league. Look out for the Thunder this year, as this is their first year in contention in the post-Westbrook era, excluding the 2020 year.

The Winners

Lastly, your 2023 NBA Summer League champions, the Cleveland Cavaliers. Despite not having any prospects that WOW you, the Cavs managed to get it done, thanks to Isaiah Mobley and Emoni Bates. Bates is the one player on the roster with some intrigue, although he has a ways to go defensively and efficiency-wise, despite a positive Summer League showing. Shoutout to Sharife Cooper as well — fun passer who should land a two-way contract somewhere. That's it, though; Summer League doesn't matter that much team-wise, so take this Championship with a grain of salt as it doesn't really carry much weight.

Starting on July 3rd, NBA Summer League action returned in the form of the annual California Classic and the Salt Lake City Summer League. With a lot to play for, many players stood out in their own ways respectively. Check them out below!

California Classic Standouts

For the California Classic in the Golden 1 Center in Sacramento, the Kings, Hornets, Heat, Lakers, Spurs, and Warriors competed against one another. Although there were many positives from each team, it was a recurring theme of 2nd-year standouts looking to make a jump who took over. Here are some of the standouts from the California Classic:

Keegan Murray - Kings forward Keegan Murray took great strides during the offseason adding various moves to his bag, looking poised to take a leap in the Kings' offense this year. In his first matchup vs. the Warriors, Murray took it to them, dropping 29 points on solid efficiency, followed up by a performance of eerily similar dominance against Nikola Jović's Heat, dropping 41 points in the process. Look for Murray to fast-track his trajectory this year, headed to be more of an offensive threat.

Julian Champagnie - Fresh off a new 4-year contract, Champagnie backed up his new money by displaying his ability to knock down threes at a high clip while maintaining the San Antonia Spurs way. Averaging 29.0 ppg over 2 games in Sacramento, Champagnie put the rest of the league on notice. It'll be interesting to track Champagnie's gametime this year as his breakout could be on the horizon, as shown in flashes last spring.

Lester Quinones - The 2nd-year undrafted man out of Memphis spent the majority of last year in the G-League developing his game with the Santa Cruz Warriors but is ready to unleash his game now. Against Keegan Murray and the Kings, Quinones was deep in his bag, showing off moves that looked similar to a former teammate, Jordan Poole. Whether it was the sidesteps and flair or the ability to knock down the three-ball, it seems like Quinones may have an opportunity to crack the Warriors' 15-man roster this year for good.

Salt Lake City Summer League Standouts

Out in Salt Lake City, the highly anticipated return of 2022 #2 Overall pick Chet Holmgren had lots of people tuning in, but there's more than just Chet to it. The Thunder were definitely in a league of their own in Salt Lake at points, but there were lots of flashes from other teams that showed lots of signs of encouragement. Here are my Salt Lake City Summer League standouts:

Jalen Williams - All it took was one game for Jalen Williams to establish himself as one of the top players in this year's Summer League. The Santa Clara product selected 12th Overall in 2022 showed lots of promise for a breakout year on the national scene after dropping a silky smooth 21 points on elite efficiency. Another thing to note about JDub's performance Monday night was his willingness to take and make the pull-up jumper. Unlocking a pull-up jumper could allow JDub to take a leap that not many may see coming. No matter how the rest of Jalen Williams' Summer League plays out, know his impact will be felt in the day, weeks, months, and years to come.

Keyontae George - Despite a rocky start to Summer League, the Utah Jazz have bright spots to point to in the form of their 16th Overall pick, Keyontae George. George started all three games over the past four days displaying his commanding presence in the process. Before I get ahead of myself, I want to acknowledge that George is far from perfect. Still, it was encouraging to see signs of his old self over the past couple of days, signifying he's fully healed from his ankle injury. Hopefully, George can regain some of the burst that made him so dynamic in high school. Despite not having 2/3 of their picks, the Jazz can walk away from this SLC Summer League feeling good about their selection of George, who carries lots of promise to look forward to.

Tre Mann - The third-year man out of Florida sped up and never looked back. Mann posted averages of 23.7 PPG, 6.3 RBD, and 3.0 AST on excellent efficiency. Tre Mann has always held promise as a shot-creator, but for him to get to the next level, he needed to show the signs of efficiency he's now showing. All this leaves you wondering, could Tre Mann take a leap next year? Time will tell, as it does for most things. There is no doubt about how dynamic Mann is, but many wonder if there's a role for him. With former EuroLeague MVP Vasilije Micić and 10th Overall pick Cason Wallace joining the team, it's hard to see a direct path to impactful minutes for Mann. With that being said, we'll have to wait to see how the cards play out in OKC regarding the Guard dynamic and who gets minutes, but if given minutes, look out for Tre Mann to start to become an impactful guard in this league.

There is so much to like about D'Moi Hodge. The British Virgin Islands native has had quite the journey so far, making stops all over the US en route to LA to join LeBron's Lakers. Hodge, a pesky guard known for his defensive acumen, also has a budding three-point shot which he backed up at the Portsmouth Invitational after shooting 50% from 3 there.

From this, I'd hope you can gather that Hodge embodies what a 3-and-D player is all about. A few days ago on Twitter, I saw someone talk about the similarities between Hodge and KCP, making the Lakers the ultimate fit for Hodge. As long as he comes in ready to be a sponge and compete, Hodge will be well on his way to being on a standard NBA contract full-time. Hodge will turn heads in a few months, so why not turn your head now?
