Jarace Walker's Impact on Winning
The Unstoppable Influence of Jarace Walker in Pursuit of Victory
Impactful is the word that comes to mind when describing Jarace Walker. The product of the University of Houston is a highly impactful Forward that contributes to winning at the highest level in this draft class. That's why I confidently say Walker could've gotten minutes in this past week's NBA Finals had need be. Jarace Walker is, first and foremost, a winner.
All of that starts on the defensive end, where Walker prides himself on being amongst the best in his class. Walker's imposing 6'8", 240 lbs frame makes him feared in opponents' eyes as they get set to attack in the half-court. Offensively, Walker is more of a contributor than a second or third option, which I believe is his potential in the future. Walker's defense, combined with average three-point shooting, leaves him with an extremely high floor amongst top prospects while maintaining a high ceiling.
Strengths
As mentioned, Walker is an exceptional defender, which is where his value immediately lies in the NBA. Walker is blessed with phenomenal physical prowess combined with a 7'2" wingspan. Once you factor in that he possesses an incredibly high defensive IQ and is disciplined defensively, you come out with the sum of Jarace Walker, a potential All-NBA defender that can guard 1-5. Walker's chiseled frame allows him to bang down low with bigs despite giving up a few inches in height. He can also guard on the perimeter due to having above-average lateral quickness for a prospect of his stature.
Jarace Walker Isolation Defense
The video above gives prime examples of how positive of a defender Jarace Walker is and how it contributes to winning. Walker forced opponents into shooting 20% FG in isolation situations using his size, lateral quickness, and discipline.
Jarace Walker Complete Defensive Highlights
These videos show what Walker can do at the next level for a team. In today's NBA, they're endless good wings, and Walker has all the intangibles to be the man to extinguish the flame in their offense.
The next skill that gets NBA executives giddy about Walker is his offensive upside as a creator, whether for himself or others. In the times when Walker was allowed to create, he thrived, showing flashes of excellence offensively.
And another clip about Walker’s underrated playmaking/creation:
Despite not being asked to be a primary creator at Houston by Kelvin Sampson, Walker showed executives that he is more than capable of doing so, displaying a promising mid-range game combined with some decent playmaking ability.
Weaknesses
When you look at Walker, he has no glaring weaknesses that make him unplayable or a negative out there on the court at the next level. But Walker definitely has areas of his game that he can improve upon.
The first area of Walker's game that can be improved is his three-point shooting. Despite making one a game on relatively acceptable shooting, Walker doesn't display the ability of upside as a shooter, which would make him invaluable at the next level. His poor FT% at 66.3% doesn't help when projecting his shot in five years, but improved mechanics since his IMG days and touch on floaters this year suggest otherwise. Time will tell all for Walker and his three-point shot.
Jarace Walker 3 Pointers - Indiana Pacers Pre-Draft Workout
And another clip of Walker being a work in progress from three:
Walker is a work in progress from beyond the arc, but there is upside there, considering his touch around the basket on floaters.
Another hole in Walker's game is in his loose handle, which can sometimes get exposed, leading to turnovers. Cleaning this up will be vital to Walker's development if he wants to become more involved in the Pick & Roll and be a primary creator offensively.
Tightening up his handle to limit turnovers so that he can get to the basket and make sure he can use his fantastic frame (which oddly enough doesn't use as much as you'd think) should be a priority for Walker throughout this Pre-Draft process.
As a prospect, Walker is exceptionally positive, lacking glaring weaknesses, which makes him extremely attractive to NBA decision-makers. Combine that with phenomenal defensive versatility, a high floor, and budding offensive potential, and you get Walker, a prospect who walks into your building from Day 1 ready to make a change to help whatever team he is selected to become a winning ball club.
Fit
Walker is a winning player, which is very much applicable to any team in the lottery, but Detroit at #5 and Indiana at #7 are emerging as the two most likely landing spots for Walker. Both places make sense when you consider they both have their cores already established, meaning Walker could walk into two situations tailor-made for his style of basketball: winning. In Detroit, Walker could slide into the role Saddiq Bey played for his share of seasons in Detroit under new head coach Monty Williams. The return of Cade Cunningham to join Jaden Ivey and Jalen Duren would make the Pistons an ideal landing spot for Walker. On the flip side, Walker could easily slide into the lineup in Indiana, establishing himself as a fantastic complimentary piece alongside newly-minted All-Star Tyrese Haliburton and budding star Benedict Mathurin. Both places are towns where they may feel ready to compete, and Jarace Walker would be the perfect fit player to help establish a new era of winning culture.
Wrap-Up
In a league hungry for impact players, Jarace Walker stands out as a prospect with all the necessary tools to make a lasting difference on both ends of the court. From his exceptional defensive skills to his budding offensive potential, Walker's game is tailored for success at the highest level. His imposing frame, defensive prowess, and high basketball IQ make him a standout defender capable of guarding multiple positions. Combined with his disciplined approach, Walker can disrupt opponents' offenses and alter the game's flow. While his three-point shooting and ball handling have room for improvement, Walker's progress in his mid-range game and playmaking abilities showcase his untapped potential as a versatile threat. His winning mentality and ability to contribute to team success make him an enticing prospect for NBA decision-makers, with the potential to transform a franchise into a contender a few years down the line. That is why Jarace Walker impacts winning so much.
